No safe place’ in Gaza as severe hunger spreads

Chicago – December 10, 2023

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) says 36 percent of Gaza households are now experiencing “severe hunger”.

There is “no safe place to go in the Gaza Strip” says Ashraf al-Qudra, the spokesperson for Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Yemen’s Houthis warn they will target all Israel-bound ships.

The US State Department has skipped a congressional review for the emergency sale of 14,000 tank shells to Israel.

At least 17,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7 with more than 48,800 wounded. In Israel, the revised official death toll stands at about 1,147.

Al-Mawasi, a narrow strip of land next to the Mediterranean Sea, has been designated a “humanitarian zone” by Israel.

But home to tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians, living in tents in an area only about 1km (0.6 miles) wide and 14km (8.7 miles) long, Al-Mawasi is neither safe nor humane.

“We need a solution. If you’re waiting for us to die, for sure – in three weeks time people are going to die from no food, no medicine, no medication, no nothing,” said Yaser Abu Asi, a displaced Palestinian in Al Mawasi.
