An Indian businessman donated Rs 2.5 crore to help free 900 convicts in the UAE prisons.

Since the beginning of 2024, an Indian businessman and philanthropist has donated one million dirhams (about Rs 2.5 crore) to obtain the release of 900 convicts from jails across the Gulf nation.

Firoz Merchant, owner of Gold Jewellers, gave the UAE authorities one million dirhams. He is based in Dubai.

Firoz Merchant’s office stated that this is a message of humility, humanity, forgiveness, and goodwill in preparation for Ramzan.

Merchant, famed for his ‘The Forgotten Society’ programme, has already enabled the release of 900 convicts since the start of 2024.

According to the Maagulf news page, were 495 convicts in Ajman, 170 in Fujairah, 121 in Dubai, 69 in Umm Al Quwain, and 28 in Ras Al Khaimah.

Merchant also paid their debts and provided plane tickets for them to return home to reunite families and give them a second chance at life.

His goal for 2024 is to see over 3,000 convicts released.
