The White House is mulling unilateral action to limit migrants’ ability to seek asylum at the US-Mexico border if they crossed illegally, a move similar to controversial actions taken under the Donald Trump administration that will undoubtedly elicit strong opposition from immigration advocates and leftists.
The handling of the US-Mexico border has plagued President Joe Biden for years, as migration across the Western Hemisphere reached record levels, resulting in thousands of people arriving at the border.
The action being discussed by the White House appears to be an extension of some of the strongest features in the border compromise package that Republicans rejected—another indicator of the White House’s efforts to show they’re robust on border security ahead of Election Day.
There has been no final decision on the proposed measure, which entails employing a power known as 212f between ports of entry to curb illegal border crossings. According to an administration official, the administration frequently considers potential actions but does not always proceed.
