The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Friday. The vote came as UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a high risk of the humanitarian support system collapsing, which could have disastrous effects in the besieged enclave.
During the debate, the Palestinian ambassador referenced the hundreds killed or maimed in Israel’s assault on Gaza, saying, “Enough is enough.” At the same time, Israel’s envoy claimed a truce would prolong the war and that the only way to achieve peace was to eradicate Hamas.
Israel believes the individuals in Gaza seen in photographs of mass detention by the Israeli military are “suspected terrorists.” At the same time, Hamas accuses Israel of targeting “a group of displaced Palestinian civilians.” At least three of the guys apprehended were civilians with no known ties to extremist groups.
Israel’s military claimed it carried out strikes on over 450 targets in the last day, the most documented since the collapse of a truce with Hamas a week ago.
