A BJP legislator shot at a Shiv Sena city leader near Mumbai last night, according to police. Ganpat Gaikwad shot Mahesh Gaikwad at a police station, purportedly over a land dispute.
Ganpat Gaikwad represents the Kalyan East constituency in Kalyan, around 40 kilometres from Mumbai. During the Maharashtra administration, his party formed an alliance with Mr Shinde’s Sena. The firing injured two people, according to Sudhakar Pathare, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Five bullets have been removed from his body, but he remains critical and on a ventilator following his surgery last night.
Ganpat Gaikwad told a TV channel that the dispute was about land that Mahesh Gaikwad reportedly seized. He claimed he shot fire in self-defence because they were misbehaving with his son and expressed no regrets.
Ganpat Gaikwad and two others have been arrested after the police filed an attempted murder complaint.
