On Tuesday, the United States House of Representatives rejected a Republican-led bill that would provide $17.6 billion to Israel, with Democrats wanting a vote on a broader measure that would also provide aid to Ukraine, international humanitarian funding, and new border security funds.
The vote was 250 to 180, which fell short of the requisite two-thirds majority for passage.
Israel is one of the largest recipients of U.S. foreign aid. Financial assistance to Israel has long garnered significant bipartisan backing in Congress. However, many opponents criticised the House legislation as a Republican political ploy to divert attention away from their opposition to a $118 billion Senate bill that combines an overhaul of US immigration policy and new border security funding with billions of dollars in emergency aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Indo-Pacific partners.
