Undocumented immigrants in Illinois will be eligible to obtain a driver’s licence beginning January 1, according to legislation passed earlier this year by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
According to a previous news release from Pritzker’s office, undocumented residents will be awarded a standard four-year driver’s licence, which will serve as a legal form of identity and will be provided in place of the present Temporary Visitor Driver’s Licence.
According to Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, Temporary Visitor Driver’s Licences have become the “Scarlet Letter” of an individual’s immigration status, exposing them to prejudice or immigration enforcement.
Applicants must still pass a driving test, have proper insurance, show identification, and have lived in Illinois for at least one year.
