The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intends to hire 50 artificial intelligence professionals this year to assist it in combating child abuse, countering fentanyl production, and assessing damage from natural disasters as it looks to expand its use of the emerging technology.
According to a press release seen by Reuters and set to be released later on Tuesday, the agency tasked with securing US borders will announce the hiring effort at an event in Mountain View, California, headlined by Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Eric Hysen.
The agency did not specify what the experts would accomplish but stated they would have cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering skills.
