In response to media reports linked to the illicit trade of kidneys for organ transplants by Myanmar nationals, the Indian Ministry of Health has initiated an investigation into Apollo Hospital Delhi, which is affiliated with the largest private hospital chain, Apollo Hospitals (APLH.NS).
In addition to forming a committee to investigate the matter, the hospital has been contacted for information regarding donors and patients.
Apollo’s associate in the management of its two institutions in the Delhi metropolitan area, Indraprastha Medical Corp (IMCL.NS), announced that it had launched an investigation into the matter and deemed the allegations “completely unfounded, misguided, and false.”
Young Myanmarese villagers were allegedly transported to Apollo’s hospital in Delhi and coerced into selling their kidneys to affluent Burmese patients as part of a “cash for kidneys” scandal, according to a report in the British newspaper Telegraph.
In 2022, Chennai-based chain Apollo, which operates more than 70 facilities throughout India, reportedly conducted 1,641 solid organ transplants. The hospital also treats foreign patients who fly into India.
