A significant increase in violent incidents has been observed in the West Bank, including fatal shootings of Palestinians by armed Jewish settlers. A consequence of the high frequency of attacks is the condemnation of violence perpetrated by extremist settlers by Israel’s closest allies, which includes the United States and the United Kingdom, and the demand for prosecution of those responsible.
In practice, settlers rarely end up in court, and if they do, they can usually expect light sentences.
Under the leadership of Itamar Ben Gvir, the minister of national security, and Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister with security responsibilities in the West Bank, the settlers are armed and supported by influential allies within the Israeli government.
