According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, concerns about political extremism and risks to democracy have become the top concerns among American voters. President Joe Biden is slightly ahead of Donald Trump on this topic ahead of the November election.
More than 21% of participants in the three-day survey, which ended on Sunday, chose “political extremism or threats to democracy” as the largest issue confronting the United States, compared to 19% who chose the economy and 18% who chose immigration.
Trump’s Republicans heavily selected immigration, while Biden’s Democrats ranked radicalism as the top problem.
Overall, respondents were split 34% in favor of Biden’s strategy for dealing with extremism and 31% in favor of Trump, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.
The poll highlights the degree to which Americans’ support for Biden’s reelection campaign may depend more on their opposition to Trump than their enthusiasm for Biden’s campaign.
